Acetate Metabolism in the Ruminant.

چکیده
Biochemists have long recognized the central role of acetate in the energy metabolism of most forms of life. But whereas for most organisms the supply of acetate, or rather its active form, acetyl coenzyme A, is almost entirely endogenous, ruminant animals have a large exogenous supply of acetate, which is produced in the rumen by microbial fermentation of ingested foodstuffs. In the ruminant, acetate, along with the other short chain fatty acids, particularly propionate and butyrate, provides the chief source of energy for the animal. Tolerance tests (l-3) have shown that the ruminant can metabolize the imposed load of large amounts of acetate. Previous isotope studies (4-7) indicate that the body pool of acetate turns over very rapidly and that the turnover rate, or acetate flux, when expressed as calories, represents a considerable proportion of the total energy requirement of the animal. As part of a continuing study of energy metabolism in ruminants we have used W-acetate to study the size and rate of metabolism of the acetate pool in fed sheep. To understand more fully the role of acetate in the energetics of the whole animal, we have examined the metabolism of both the methyl and the carboxyl carbons, and also the metabolism of acetate infused into a rumen vein as opposed to a jugular vein.

The relative significance of acetate and glucose as precursors for lipid synthesis in liver and adipose tissue from ruminants.
1. The incorporation of labelled glucose into lipid by liver slices from sheep and cows is considerably less than that by liver slices from the rat, although oxidation to carbon dioxide occurs to a similar extent. ATP citrate lyase and NADP malate dehydrogenase are inactive in both sheep and cow liver but active in rat liver. The absence of the citrate-cleavage pathway of lipogenesis in ruminan...
متن کاملMicrowave irradiation of whole soybeans in ruminant nutrition: Protein and carbohydrate metabolism in vitro and in situ
Whole soybeans serve as one of the main sources of protein in ruminant nutrition. Different processing methods have been employed for ruminal protein protection. The present study was conducted to determine the effects of microwave irradiation [900 W; 2, 4 and 6 min] on quality, ruminal degradability and estimated in vitro intestinal digestibility of availability soybean crude protein....
متن کاملbeta-Hydroxybutyrate and acetate metabolism of the perfused bovine udder.
It was established by Shaw and Knodt (I) that the normal lactating udder (in situ) of the cow utilizes almost 2 mg. of phydroxybutyric acid per 100 ml. of blood traversing the udder; it was calculated that this was sufficient to account for the short chain fatty acids of milk fat or for about 40 per cent of the oxygen consumption of the secreting gland if it were oxidized for energy purposes. L...

متن کاملNitrogen Metabolism, Digestibility and Blood Profile of West African Dwarf Goats Fed Dietary Levels of Cajanus cajan as Supplement to Cassava Peels
The effect of inclusion level on nutrient intake, digestibility, nitrogen metabolism and haematological parameters of West African Dwarf (WAD) goat fed Cajanus cajan as supplement to cassava peels was investigated in a completely randomized design experiment using twenty-four WAD goats with average initial weight of 10.75±0.85kg (March-September, 2016). There were four treatments as: A...
